In fourth grade, we learn about God as Creator and Father, Jesus’s Law of Love, the Beatitudes, Jesus as Redeemer, The Sacraments, the Ten Commandments, and Jesus’s call to continue his mission as His disciples.
In fourth grade, novel studies include The Kid in the Red Jacket and Emma and The Civil Warrior. Our reading resources are Open Court Reading Series, Scholastic News, Leveled Book Series, and poetry study.
Writing / Language Arts
We study writing in the forms of narratives, opinions, and informative/explanatory pieces. Practicing narrative writing prompts prepare the fourth graders for the standardized test in early March. Language arts concepts include nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, suffixes, prefixes, and pronouns with the use of technology to support writing ideas.
Spelling and Vocabulary
In fourth grade we use the Wordly Wise Spelling and Vocabulary Program.
We study multi-digit multiplication, long division, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions and mixed numbers, basic geometry concepts, decimals, and problem-solving strategies.
Fourth-grade study includes earth structure, rocks and minerals, electricity/energy composition, properties of matter, ecosystems, and collecting/interpreting data. We incorporate projects and hands-on in-class assignments.
We study North Carolina and United States history where we delve into branches of state and national government and North Carolina geography.
Students learn to listen, speak, read, and write in a more advanced stage. Students will focus their oral and written expression on the incorporation of grammar, vocabulary, and conversation. Students will be taught the Hispanic culture through videos, celebrations, and presentations.
